Film Festival - Wellington's Turn
The first offering for Wellington is the Ken Loach film “Bread and Roses”. We are thrilled to announce that New Zealand director Gaylene Preston will take part in the opening, providing an insight into the significance of the term bread and roses in relation to labour rights. Duncan Sarkies will also be joining us and has written an opening night poem in our honour.
Gaylene will be joined on a discussion panel after the screening by Carol Beaumont, Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Trade Unions and Desigin Thulkanam of the Human Rights Commission. The panel will be chaired by Gillian Dias, board member of Oxfam New Zealand.
Providing a safe space to discuss human rights is one of the main objectives of the film festival. The whole speakers programme for Wellington week is available at http://www.humanrightsfilmfest.net.nz.
We have two other exciting additions to announce:
The screening of “Resistencia: Hip-Hop in Colombia” on Friday 27 May at 8.15pm will be preceded by a live performance by Wellington hip-hop group, The Wanderers.
The final version of “Reframe”, by New Zealand director Jo Luping, has been edited to 60 minutes. As an added bonus we will screen “Passionate Voices”, a 30 minute short documentary examining the American Jewish discourse on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Passionate Voices” follows committed individuals whose views span the political spectrum and is a great complement to “Reframe”.
Tickets for all sessions can be pre-booked from the Paramount Theatre on 384.4488, http://www.paramount.co.nz or are available at the door. Don’t be disappointed - many sessions have been sell-outs in other centres.
Get ready for a week of stimulating and thought-provoking visual media – commencing on Wednesday. We look forward to seeing you there!
