Sri Lanka – NGOs Under Attack
Over the last year, local and international NGOs operating in Northeast of Sri Lanka have been under attack. Examples of such attacks include: on the 29th and 20th January 2006 (two separate incidents) 7 employees of Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation were kidnapped in Northeast Sri Lanka; and on the 6th August 2006, 17 employees of Action Against Hunger were found massacred at the organisation’s base in Muttur (Northeast Sri Lanka).
One year on from the first incident there has been no investigation and the perpetrators have not been brought to justice. The Sri Lanka Government has made a lot of promises to investigate the second incident, however no progress has been made so far.
Mani Maniparathy (Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation NZ) and Siva Naguleswaran (Consortium of Tamil Associations in NZ) will outline the situation facing NGOs in Sri Lanka – to be followed by the discussion.
